Szolnok and its surroundings
Seat of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, the city of Szolnok is the centre of this area.
In former times the River Tisza used to wantonly wind across these plains extremely rich in fish and game, providing an attractive habitat for humans, as early as prehistoric times. Szolnok was established during the Árpád Age at a point of strategic importance: the confluence of the River Zagyva into the Tisza. Its earthwork fortress served as an administrative centre back then. The most important river crossing of the Tisza on the route towards Transylvania, it was also a salt distribution centre. Later on the regulation of the River Tisza completely changed conditions of life and the economy. The Damjanich Museum is dedicated to the history of this city.
The landscape contains a few districts belonging to the Central Tisza Landscape Protection Area (Közép-Tiszai Tájvédelmi Körzet).
