Tata Wild Geese Flock
The´Tata Wild Geese Flock´ will be held on the last weekend of November. The mission
of the event since 2001 is to popularise nature and bird
conservation, and to protect the natural heritage of Old Lake (Öreg-tó) at
Tata.
Several hundreds of people attend the bird
watch annually. The most important event of the 'Wild Geese Multitude' is the
12 hour bird watching competition, where expert twitchers as well as amateurs or hobbyist
can test their skills in bird observation. The bird protection and nature
protection open days attract many people especially on Saturday. The Sunday walk
to the dam and the bird watching station are integral part of the
event.
Amongst the birds which can be observed, that are
of particular interest are the herring gull (Larus argentatus) and the redpoll
(Carduelis flammea), since they are rare in this area. Barnacle goose (Branta leucopsis), merlin
(Falco columbarius), Baltic gull (Larus fuscus), skylark (Alauda arvensis),
red-throated pipit (Anthus cervinus), firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus), and
carrion crow (Corvus corone) are some of the highlights. However, the most spectacular
sight is the huge flock of 15,000 bean gooses (Anser fabilis) which chooses to spend the night
here with the several hundreds of yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis).
