Tata and the Gerecse Hills
Part of the Transdanubian Range, the Gerecse Hills form the majority of this countryside. The city of Tata is the largest settlement here.
The Gerecse peaks are 400 to 600 metres high and the landscape is structured by rocky hills next to eroded valleys. The Gerecse Landscape Protection Area embraces the most valuable parts including their rare plant communities and special species. The range's most precious botanic asset is the Ferula sadleriana. Thanks to a special project in protecting breeding spots, the once endangered saker falcon has again a stable population here.
Tata is known as the city of waters, and indeed, a number of small to medium lakes invite visitors to bathe or to engage in water sports. The excellent wines of Neszmély are definitely worth tasting here. The Vértesszőlős prehistoric finds are the oldest human remains of the region.
