The Őrség
Although primarily known as an ethnographic unit, the settlements of the Hetés also belong to this small region.
Trusted clans charged with the protection of the western borders at the time of the establishment of the state were settled in the Őrség (the word signifies 'guard'). They received certain privileges in return for their service. The so-called 'szeres' settlement structure is distinctive of the Őrség; the plots were not arranged in streets, but sit astride the hillsides as small hamlets. These hamlets were originally home to one or two extended families, or clans.
The vernacular architecture of the Hetés is similar to that of the Göcsej, but it is even simpler. Embroidery and weaving were most important among the crafts.
The Őrség National Park was merged into the Fertő-Hanság National Park in 2007.
