The Rudas Thermal Baths and Swimming Pool (Rudas Gyogyfurdo es Uszoda)
The Rudas Thermal Baths is the most extraordinary amongst the baths built during the time of the Turkish occupation of Budapest. The sunlight filters through the holes of the octagonal ceiling, creating a unique atmosphere in this recently refurbished genuine Turkish baths.
The majority of the visitors are drawn to the unusual and mysterious atmosphere of the baths. Many people say that this is the most calming and relaxing bath in Europe. There is a traditional order for bathing: after the 36 degrees Centigrade pool, comes the 28 degree, followed by the 30, 33 and finally the 42 degrees Centigrade. The bathing is followed by the pools of the steam baths, in ascending order: 16, 42, and 28 degrees Centigrade.
The radioactive, sulphurous, thermal waters of the baths contain sodium, and calcium- and magnesium-hydrogen carbonate; they also have a significant fluoride content. The waters provide effective treatment in cases of degenerative illnesses of joints, chronic and semi-acute arthritis, protruded inter-vertebral discs, neuralgia, and calcium deficiency of the bone system.
In the baths there are also a swimming pool, steam pools, and a sauna. The temperature of the waters varies between 16 and 42 degrees Centigrade; the water surface of the pools varies between 4.5 and 96.5 square metres.
There is also a daytime outpatients hospital with a complete physiotherapy department in the baths. Additionally there are steam sauna and dry sauna chambers, as well as medical and recreational massage. In the drinking hall of Rudas Baths, healing spring water can be taken as part of a drinking cure. The Rudas Baths is close to Gellért Baths.
