The Zemplen Hills
The Zemplén Hills are of volcanic origin and significant tracts are covered in continuous forest. The highest point is Nagy-Milic (894 metres) near Hollóháza. The larger settlements in the area are Gönc, Pálháza and Hollóháza.
Large stretches of this area belong to the Zemplén Landscape Protection Area which encompasses two distinct geographical parts: the Nagy-Milic Range in the north and the Háromhuta Range in the south. Alongside the natural assets there is also plentiful heritage to explore here: the castles of Füzér and Boldogkő, the ruins of the Regéc castle, as well as the Károlyi Palace in Füzérradvány are all worth a visit. Take the narrow gauge railway through the forest from Pálháza to the hunting lodge country retreat at Kőkapu and make sure you pay a visit to the porcelain museum at Hollóháza.
