The northern shore and the Balaton Uplands
The settlements on and around the northern shore are popular holiday
resorts. Those who seek to escape the cities and appreciate peaceful rural life
would do well to include the villages of the Balaton Uplands in their
itinerary.
This landscape shelters countless natural assets such as the 'stone seas' of the Balaton Uplands and the basalt columns of St George's Hill (Szentgyörgy-hegy) near Tapolca. Of particular value are the loess wall at Balatonkenese, home to a bee eater colony, and also the Tihany Peninsula. Or what about a concert in the Tihany Abbey, or a stroll on Tagore Esplanade in Balatonfüred? Not to speak of the numerous museums, memorial houses and heritage buildings.

The museum was established by renowned Africa hunter
Dr Endre Nagy. His unusual and
valuable trophies are displayed alongside his Tanzanian ethnographic collection.
There is also a small safari park around the building.
