Vörösmarty Square, Budapest

The real centre of the city is the Vörösmarty Square, with the marble statue of the author of the 'Szózat' (the second most important national hymn after the national anthem), the legendary Gerbeaud patisserie, street drawers, and numerous open-air events.

The square is dominated by the Carrara marble statue of Mihály Vörösmarty. The Gerbaud House with its famous patisserie is a corner stone of the square. Its founder came from Switzerland, more than a hundred years ago and even today the pastries and sweets are made according to his recipes. The interior design evokes days gone by, too.

This square links the Danube Embankment (Duna korzó) with Váci Street (Váci utca), and is thus both a sight in itself and an attractive place to promenade any day of the week. Several events are organised here from the Book Festivals to the Christmas Markets. The opening parade of the Budapest Spring Festival also starts from here.
