Vors
The resort village on the shores of Little Balaton (Kis-Balaton) is known as 'Wild Water Country'. Thanks to its outstanding natural assets it has become a starting point for ecotourism along Lake Balaton.
The Balaton was once a far larger lake than it is today. The natural crossing of its Western basin stretched between Fenékpuszta and Our Lady's Island (Máriaasszony-sziget) at Vörs.
The interesting natural environment well suited for fishing and hunting combined with its location near the Balaton have made Vörs a popular vacation spot. Several houses with pleasant gardens are available for holidaymakers in search of peace and quiet in a village setting.
The settlement carefully preserves its old traditions and is famous for its Nativity play and the celebrations at the festival of St Martin.
The regional museum based in a peasant's house has rooms furnished with period furniture of the Balaton area which evoke peasant life in the 19th century. The visitor may also explore the natural history of the Little Balaton. An exhibition in the fire station introduces the tools and methods of fire prevention in the late 19th and early 20th century.
How to get there:
By public transport, take a train to Nagykanizsa stopping at Vörs. Local Volán buses serve Vörs from Keszthely, and from Balatonszentgyörgy. By car take Route 7501 from of Balatonszentgyörgy.
