Zirc Arboretum
Established from the landscaped English gardens of the Cistercian Abbey, the Botanic Gardens are Hungary's highest-lying arboretum. It aims to collect and exhibit the indigenous plants of the Bakony Hills.
The 18 hectares of arboretum set out as a convent garden in 1737. In 1753, forest was cleared near the monastery, but a few old trees were spared, including an English oak now estimated to be 400 years old.
The garden's famous row of linden trees was planted in 1809. In 1855 a new bed was dug for the Cuha Stream, which crosses the park, while a small island was created in the lake. An arbour was built at the same time.
There are some 600 tree and shrub species in the arboretum, among them Chinese giant redwood, Lebanon cedar and yew. The stone bridge across the stream was built in 1759. A memorial to Remig Békefi, who researched the history of the Cistercian Order, was erected here in 1934.
